For this album you need to be in the right frame of mind to let it in. It is the bride’s maid not the bride and will take fleeting stints, which will be good, only as stints. But One Nite Alone… will not live in your stereo. Pearls B4 The Swine has real catch to it even though you think you have heard it before (Little House On The Prairie). There are many good tracks to be had with One Nite Alone… such as the title track, Here On Earth A Case Of U (a cover of Joni Mitchell), Avalanche and Young And Beautiful. In 1998 Prince treated us to an acoustic set with The Truth, and in that vein come 2002 he followed up with a piano showpiece One Nite Alone… It is perfectly inoffensive and can easily played to your mother quite without the need of editing those hazardous swear words of pre Millennium music. A reworked and rerecorded version of U’re Gonna C Me was later released on Prince’s studio album MPLSound in 2009. Prince, who adored Mitchell, frequently covered the track in his shows since the Triple Threat Tour in 1983, but his 2002 version is considered among the best covers of her work. One Nite Alone… includes a cover of Joni Mitchell’s A Case Of You.
The lid (which opens electronically) on Prince’s piano features a gold Prince love symbol in place of the model’s usual Pegasus figurine. The piano Prince plays on the album is a Pegasus grand piano formed of black fibreglass with integrated stool, a stylish model built to a cost of £70,000 by Schimmel, a renowned German producer of high-end pianos since 1885. One Nite Alone… was recorded at Paisley Park Studios during the spring of 2001 during the studio sessions for The Rainbow Children.

One Nite Alone… is Prince’s first album to both contain new material and not receive a full commercial release, therefore making it ineligible to chart.
